The name Sammamish is derived from two Native American words: Samena – hunter and mish – people.  Forbes ranked Sammamish 1st in its 2012 Friendliest Towns in the United States.  As of 2014, Sammamish’s population is 46,405. Since 2000 it has a population growth of 36%.  Sammamish is ranked 15th in CNN Money magazine's 2011 review of the best places to live in the United States. Home appreciation in the last year has been over 13% and Sperling's Best Places calls the Emerald City and surrounding cities the best place for a healthy and more affordable retirement.   Boasting natural beauty, a moderate climate and a wealth of outdoor and cultural activities make Sammamsih the ideal locale for active retirees.

Sammamish is fortunate to have both the highly rated Lake Washington and the Issaquah School Districts within city limits. Parents and educators are actively involved with school programs within each school system.

Sammamish has five beautiful parks, and because it borders Lake Sammamish, there is no shortage of outdoor activities.The Sammamish Parks and Recreation Department provides opportunities for all community members to safely play, gather, and learn at public parks and facilities, as well as through recreational classes, activities, and events.

Sammamish puts on many community events each year: Teen fest, 4th of Plateau, National night out and Concerts in the park. Do you like to golf? The city of Sammamish also features three world class golf courses and country clubs; Sahalee Country Club, Aldarra and The Plateau Club which brings in golfers from all over the Eastside. Along with excellent recreational opportunities, Sammamish also supports its local farmers at the seasonal Farmers Market. Sammamish is also in close proximity to many high-tech jobs in neighboring Bellevue and Redmond. Unique to the eastside, Sammamish also has its own Symphony Orchestra, a nonprofit organization based on the Sammamish Plateau led by Music Director and Conductor, R. Joseph Scott.
